When you sit with a group of people who come under the age group which is ten years or more older than you, you often hear them lamenting the lack of public gardens around your place. While there are many things that we may not agree with, when it comes to the lament of older people, this is one we cannot deny has a lot of value. A public garden is not only a space that can make your area look better but it is also a great place for people to get together and do simple tasks together. For instance, young mother with toddlers can let them work out their excess energy while they catch up with each other. Teenagers can use up their angst and go back home feeling as if the world does understand them to a certain extent. That is why the art of gardening and many styles to do it, is something that we all should give importance to. Many public gardens are often designed on one or the other designs given in the many styles of gardening.

While we are talking about public gardens and the way they are to be designed, you should also look at gorgeous garden chair ideas to gear up for any weather. Many cities and towns around the world have started realizing the importance of having public gardens in their places. It not only adds to the visual charms of the place, offer a place for the locals as well as visitors to enjoy the greenery, but it also offers an opportunity to increase greenery. We all are now aware of important it is to ensure that there are trees and plants around to keep the balance of oxygen in the atmosphere the way it is supposed to be.

The designs of public gardens are so many that it is impossible to classify and categorize all of them. This is because the garden will of necessity have to be designed as per the local plants as well as the type of terrain. The rocks and the altitude of the place will also have a role to play in the way public gardens are designed. The person in charge of designing the public garden will have to consider the weather in the place where the garden is planted.

We are not saying that some places do not have gardens that are specialized with special conditions to encourage the growth of certain plants like a greenhouse for tropical plants, but this is not the norm generally speaking. This is because the budgets for public gardens is limited and the design has to be based on practical considerations.

The next time you are out strolling in a public garden enjoying the greenery around and looking at the people enjoying the charms of the garden, do take a minute to study the design of the public garden. It is only fair to do so since we are sure by now you are aware that there has been much thought and consideration that has gone into the making of these gardens.

Carving Dead Trees Into Public Art

Trees have long life spans, but eventually they too die of old age or succumb to diseases or get damaged in thunderstorms and hurricanes. When trees in urban spaces die and show signs of toppling over or breaking off, the city might decide to remove them for the safety of those around. The remaining stumps then provide a wonderful opportunity for wood carvers to showcase their talent and liven up the neighborhood at the same time.

Here are nine towns that show us that not all pieces of public art has to involve steel, granite and concrete.

Orr Park Tree Carvings

The Orr Park in Montevallo, Alabama, the United States, has over thirty carved trees located along the park’s walking trail along Shoal Creek. The trees were carved by local artist Tim Tingle.

In 1983, a storm had hit Montevallo and caused a lot of damage to the wooded area of Orr Park. The city wanted to remove the damaged cedar trees, but local artist Tim Tingle stepped in and offered to have the dead trees turned into works of art. Tim began carving the trees in 1993 and over the course of several years carved figures, faces, and story book characters on the trunks of over thirty trees. The carved trees are now known as Tinglewood.

John Hooper’s Public Art And Sculptures

Located in front of Barbour's General Store on King Street in downtown Saint John, in New Brunswick, Canada, is a set of eleven life-sized wood figures depicting people patiently waiting for something. One man buries his face at a newspaper. Another in trench coat, hands in pockets, lurks behind dark glasses. A bald gentlemen with a blond-haired child holds to a pinwheel while the child clutches a lollipop. Two guys chat on a motorcycle next to a lady. A woman sits on a bench, hands folded in her lap, as her child mischievously peeks over the back. An elderly man feeds a pigeon.

The sculptural pieces called “People Waiting” was made by English-born Canadian sculptor John Hooper back in 1977 for Canada Post, and originally stood in front of the Rothesay Avenue post office for 30 years. The sculptures were commissioned as part of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's plan to grace government building with public art. But once the pieces started to weather, Canada Post did not wanted to pay for its upkeep. The city of Saint John then stepped in and paid the $15,000 needed for refurbishment. The statues were restored and relocated to its current site on King Street.
