There is a strong connection in folklore and popular culture between pumpkins and the supernatural. The jack-o-lantern custom connected to Halloween is probably the most specific of all when it comes to folklore. In Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, the main character, Jack Skellington, is “the Pumpkin King.” This character from popular culture is a perfect inspiration for creatives who fancy pumpkin carving and to be carved into decorative lanterns.

For more than a hundred years, grain silos doting the plains across the Wimmera-Mallee region of Victoria, Australia, have defined the state's rural landscape. Now these grain towers will provide a new aesthetic as they are transformed into enormous works of art paying tribute to the regions' farmers.
In December 2015, Brisbane street artist Guido Van Helten created a gigantic mural spread across four disused silos in the town of Brim, capturing the imagination of the town and inspiring a new project to create a “silo art trail” featuring murals painted on silos throughout Victoria's north-west. When completed sometime this year, the trail will cover 200 km connecting six small farming communities across the Wimmera-Mallee. The project, which is being touted as the country's biggest outdoor gallery, is expected to draw thousands of tourists which should help the local economy and boost the morale of the communities hit hard by drought.

The trail starts at Rupanyup, where Russian Artist Julia Volchkova has painted a monochrome mural featuring two local Rupanyup sportsperson—netballer Ebony Baker and footballer Jordan Weidemann.

The next stop is Sheep Hills, where a massive colourful mural depicting four indigenous faces has been painted on six grain silos. The towering portraits has symbolic significance to the local people.


Continuing north on the “Silo Art Trail” will take you to Brim, where Guido Van Helten’s famous mural ‘Farmer Quartet’ is located. The scene depicts four Brim residents and representative of the drought-stricken farming community. The mural became an instant regional landmark and provided the inspiration for the Silo Art Trail project.


The next destination on the trail is Rosebery, where painting has not yet started. So we’ll move to the next stop, Lascelles. Here, Melbourne street artist Rone has painted intimate portraitures of two local wheat farmers, Geoff and Merrilyn Horman, looking out over the rural landscape. Horman’s families have lived and farmed in the area for four generations.


The Silo Art Trail ends at the town of Patchewollock, where Brisbane-based street artist Fintan Magee, painted a giant mural depicting local sheep and grain farmer, Nick ‘Noodle’ Hulland. Nick was chosen for his ‘classic farmer looks’ and his strong connection to the farming community.

One of the main aspects of art especially art involves drawing and painting is learning how to reproduce the face well. You may think, what is there to a face? It is after composed of the shape of the head and face and the various features. Sure, the lines of the face are a bit complex and need some study and practice to get right, but it is hardly something that should bother an artist who is serious about his or her art.

However, you are forgetting that cheekbones, jawline, forehead, nose, lips, eyes, ears and the various lines on the face are not the only things you have to master. In fact, if you rewind what we have said a bit earlier, you will realize that the eye alone poses a challenge. You will have to learn how to draw an eye and that too step by step. But that is not we are talking about here but about learning how to draw the eyebrows and that too draw them well.



You will soon find out how faces play an important role in inspiring art due to this and other factors. You may find that studying compelling and creative charcoal drawings to capture your eye will stand you in good stead when it comes to mastering this elusive skill of drawing the eyebrow.

Before you even plunge into learning how to draw eyebrows, we advise you to spend some time studying them. Ask any woman and she will tell you that having eyebrows that are in good shape will make all the difference to the way the face looks. And on those days that the eyebrows are not groomed well, the effect on your face is adverse. What is more, the shape and the thickness of your eyebrows can change your entire look and the way your face looks. That is why you need to master how to learn the eyebrow and do it well.

Start with mastering the eye and forehead area. Choose the kind of eyebrow shape and outline you want to go with. The first thing you will have to determine is how the eye will be shaped. As you may be, aware eyes come in many shapes and even sizes. First draw the eye out and then go on to drawing the eyebrow. Start with a thin line to get the curve of the eyebrow right. We would also caution you spend some time looking at the line to be sure that it has turned out the way you wanted it to.

Once you do, draw another thicker line that will outline the shape of the eyebrow to complete the lower and upper portion of the eyebrow. The thickness of the eyebrow will have to realistic and you also have to factor in the tapering effect that well shaped eyebrows tend to have on most people’s faces. Once you have the outline of the eyebrow down pat, you will need to gently and softly fill in the hair that is part of the eyebrow.

Work at creating a textured effect so that the hair on the eyebrow looks realistic. When you study eyebrows, you will realize that the hair on the eyebrow is not even all over. In some places, you will realize that it is thick and in some places it is a bit on the sparser side. You will find that while the instructions here are fairly simple, it may be difficult to do in practice. However, we feel that you should keep at it to ensure that you get it right.

Turkish societies value animals greatly, especially birds which they believe bring good luck. The Turk's great love for the feathered species is demonstrated by the elaborate birdhouses they have built for sparrows, doves and pigeons to roost and raise their young ones. These small shelters are constructed high up and out of reach of humans and animals on the outer facades of mosques, madrasahs, libraries, houses, tombs, bridges, and palaces. The birdhouses, aside from providing shelter to birds, help keep the courtyard clean by discouraging birds from building nests randomly and polluting the environment with bird droppings. The birdhouses also fulfill a religious vision. It’s believed that if a person builds a bird house, he gains good deeds because the birds find shelter there.

During the Ottoman era, aesthetics was an important element. Many birdhouses built during this period looked like miniature palaces with two or three stories each with multiple protruding balconies, adorned with meticulously carved railings, elaborate door and window details, and crowned with a roof, dome and vault. The architectural details often reflected the style of that particular period.
Some of the earliest specimens of birdhouses in Anatolia date back to the 13th century. The Şifaiye Madrasah (1217-1218) of Sivas, the Slender Minaret (İnce Minare) Madrasah (1260-1265) of Konya and the Kutlu Hatun Tomb(1305) of Kayseri hold the oldest birdhouses known. The first birdhouses tended to be simple. The trend of building decorative and flamboyant shelters started only around the 18th century. Birdhouses built into the walls of the Ayazma Mosque (1760-1761), Yeni Valide Mosque (1708-1710), Darphane-i Amire (1727) and Selimiye Mosque (1804) are only a few examples of these rare specimens.
