El Tatio Geyser Field - Andes Mountains of northern Chile

The El Tatio Geyser Field, locally known as Los Géiseres del Tatio, is located within the Andes Mountains of northern Chile, about 89 kilometers from San Pedro. With over 80 active geysers and a hundred steamy fumaroles, El Tatio is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere and the third largest field in the world, following Yellowstone National Park in USA, and Valley of Geysers in Russia. Approximately 8% of the world geysers are located here. El Tatio is also among one of the highest-elevation geyser fields in the world, being situated at 4,200 meters above mean sea level.

Despite the large number of geysers here, the eruptions are not very high, reaching an average of only 76 centimeters. For comparison, those in Yellowstone National Park, and in Iceland, shoots up to 60-70 meters.

Jasper Creek, Venezuela

In the Gran Sabana Municipality of Bolívar State, in Venezuela, near the town of Santa Elena de Uairén, flows a small stream. The bedrock of this stream is pure jasper, a semi-precious stone of mostly quartz and silica, with a strong red color due to the presence of iron. Jasper is used throughout the world to make jewelry and ornaments. The indigenous people of Venezuela traditionally used the jasper as striking stones to create sparks to start fires, so the creek is locally known as Kako Paru or “Firestone Creek”. In English, it is known by the name of Jasper Creek or “Quebrada de Jaspe” in Spanish. Jasper Creek is located about 25 km southwest of Mount Roraima.

The Valley of Square Trees

Inside the flat wide caldera of the dormant volcano of El Valle, in Panama, is a town that goes by the same name. Here, in the foothills of Cerro Gaital behind Hotel Campestre, are a group of trees that have grown with square trunks. Even the tree rings are square. The trunk is square at the base but then becomes round as it moves upward, taking on the look of a normal tree.

How rectilinear the tree trunks are depends on who you ask. Popular websites report that the trees have “hard right angles”, but reviewers on Trip Advisor don’t think so.

A Walkway Over Water in China

The Shiziguan scenic area, in Xuan'en County of central China's Hubei Province, has unveiled a new floating walkway over a brilliantly blue meandering river. The wooden walkway runs through the middle of the river, and extends for 500 meters following the course of the river as it twists and turns through the lush green landscape. The floating walkway allows visitors to see a part of a valley that was previously accessible only by rowing boat. The walkway opened to public last Sunday.
