Another 10 of the Weirdest Marriages

Another 10 of the Weirdest Marriages

1The man who is suing to marry his computer

The man who is suing to marry his computer
An army veteran has challenged a court decision denying him the right to marry his laptop. Chris Sevier filed a motion to the 10th US Circuit Court of Appeals arguing that if same-sex couples are allowed to wed, he should be able to tie the knot with his Macbook. The amateur model claims computers are his 'preferred sexual object." (In other words, he enjoys sex with the devices more than with "real women.") He tried to marry the device, which he says is laden with porn, but Utah officials rejected the license on the grounds of "sexual orientation." However, considering the precedents set by the next few stories, he will probably get his way in no time.

Mind-Blowing Facts About The Brain

Mind-Blowing Facts About The Brain

The Brain Feels No Pain

The Brain Feels No Pain

"Relax, this won't hurt a bit..."

There are no pain receptors in the brain. That's why surgeons can perform brain surgery on a patient why they are still awake. This helps them ensure that the delicate procedure doesn't screw up any vision or motor control functions – and also it looks really freaky. Why do we feel pain? Because a nociceptor, a sensory receptor, sends signals to the spinal cord and brain alerting us to danger. Couldn't they just send a card? (Source 1 | Source 2 | Photo)

100,000 Miles of Blood Vessels in the Brain

100,000 Miles of Blood Vessels in the Brain

There are also a hundred billion neurons that comprise the brain – as many as in the entire galaxy – all in a squishy mass about the size of a cantaloupe. Using about 17% of your body's energy and 20% of its oxygen, while only containing 2% of its mass, the brain produces between 10-23 watts of power when awake -- enough to light a bulb. Made of 75% water, your noodle has over 100 trillion synapses that connect those neurons and enough “space” to hold the entire Enclyclopedia Britannica fivefold, or 1,000 terrabytes of information. And the Cheech and Chong myth isn't true; you do use your entire brain, even when high. (Source 1 | Source 2)

They Saved Einstein's Brain

They Saved Einstein's Brain

When Albert Einstein died in 1955, they didn't just save a lock of his crazy white hair, they carved out his whole melon. Dr. Thomas Harvey performed the brainectomy a mere seven-and-a-half hours after Einstein's death, purportedly for scientific research. Then it vanished. It wasn't until 1978 that an intrepid journalist named Steven Levy tracked down Dr. Harvey in Wichita, Kansas, where the good doctor admitted he still had the brain, sliced in 240 pieces and bobbing in two mason jars filled with formaldehyde. There Are Differences Between the Right and Left Brain

There Are Differences Between the Right and Left Brain

The brain is split up into two symmetrical hemispheres. While they do work together, the left brain favors more rational, analytical thinking, while the right is more visually and conceptually oriented. They also work in opposites – you stub your left toe and the “pain” is processed on the right side. And they put right-side-up whatever is upside-down – the image in your eyes is actually received inverted and the brain corrects it. But here's the REALLY weird thing – even if you were to lose one-half of your brain, you would be able to survive without it. Well, maybe that's not so weird – look at all those stupid politicians! Sorry Ladies, Men's Brains are 10% Bigger

Sorry Ladies, Men's Brains are 10% Bigger

So there you go – concrete proof that men are smarter than women. But before you go patting yourselves on the back, dudes, note that although women's brains are smaller, they have more nerve cells and connectors and work more efficiently than men's. And, true to the stereotype, they tend to process on the more “emotional” right side of the brain, while men process on the “logical” left. Also, an area known as the straight gyrus, responsible for nurturing, feminine traits, is proportionately larger in women. Does this mean there ARE indeed brain-related differences between the sexes? You WOULD think that, wouldn't you?! Typical… (Source 1 | Source 2)

Your Brain is More Active When You Sleep

Your Brain is More Active When You Sleep

No, we're not talking about the band.

Night-time is the right time for your brain to process all the activity that has occurred during the day – that's why scientists think we dream (no one is really sure why). Some believe it's a way to process the complex emotions and interactions of our daily lives, others think it's just a way to zero-out information, much like a computer. A recent study showed it may help us alleviate trauma. People with higher IQs tend to dream more, and a nap during the day has proven to make people more energized and focused on their work. Tell that to your boss. (Source 1 | Source 2)

"Inception" is Real

'Inception' is Real

It turns out, there is something called Lucid Dreaming, where a person could control the outcome of a dream while in a sleep-like state. It has its roots in ancient Tibetian Buddhism, where aspirants would practice “Dream Yoga” – doing incredible feats of dexterity during sleep, reminding themselves of the illusory nature of existence. The term was first coined by Frederik (Willem) van Eeden in the 1880s, but the concept didn't take hold until the late 1960s. Nowadays, Lucid Dreaming is all the rage, with plenty of resources online to begin the training process. It has a lot of potential – not only allowing you to conquer your nightmares but also finally have sex with the Girl Next Door. (Source 1 | Source 2 | Photo)

Why Do We Laugh? WE DON'T KNOW!

Why Do We Laugh? WE DON'T KNOW!

True laughter is involuntary – that's why the milk comes gushing out your nose. Only human beings are born with this ability (a Laughing Hyena is not really laughing) and babies begin giggling at 4 months old. And while true laughter is contagious, it is also something not easily faked. But WHY do we laugh – it's not because of jokes. Over a 10-year period, one doctor studied 2,000 laugh-inducing situations and discovered that most of the time a guffaw was not the result of a punch line. Maybe someday we will understand why we are ticklish, too. (Source | Photo)

Does Size Matter?

Does Size Matter?

Research has been mixed on the subject of brain size and intelligence – Albert Einstein's brain was only 1,230 grams, while the average adult male brain weighs 1,400. (An unusually large amount of glial cells are attributed to his smarts.) Another study shows that the bigger the person's head, the smarter they are, while those with pointier heads show less intelligence. That can't be true – look at the above photo… (Source | Photo 1 | Photo 2)

Cawston Ostrich Farm, located in Pasadena, California, was opened in 1886 by Edwin Cawston. It was America's first ostrich farm and was located in the Arroyo Seco Valley just three miles (5 km) north of downtown LA where it occupied nine acres. It was a premier tourist attraction for many years. Guests were able to ride ostriches, be taken for ostrich-drawn carriage rides and buy ostrich-feathered hats, boas, capes and fans at the gift shop store was connected to the factory.

William (Bill) D. Snyder came to Africa as part of the Gatti Expedition to the Mountains of the Moon, 1947-1948. Snyder left the team in March 1948 and found another job as a sound technician with Arch Oboler.
Snyder and Oboler visited the compound of Carr-Hartley in Rumuruti, Kenya in the summer of 1948. Afterward, Hartley gave some pictures to Snyder.
Hartley went to Sudan to capture specimens of the white rhino in that country, which were later delivered to Antwerp and Hanover zoos. It is likely that this occurred in 1949, and the photos must date from around that time.

Nawaf, right, from a selfie
A "swegway" (also known as a hoverboard) is a Segway without handles. Whatever you call it, these electric skateboard-like devices are illegal on public streets in Britain and are believed to be highly dangerous. In early December 2015, Nawaf Al-Tuwayan, a 15-year-old who lived in London, used one to make a trip to the store to get some milk for his mother. Witnesses say he looked unsteady on the device and fell in the middle of the road, only to be hit by a double decker bus and dragged 200 yards. His was the first known death of its sort in England. (In October 2015, a 6-year-old was killed while riding a hoverboard in the UAE).

According to the truck driver, Brown was watching a Harry Potter movie on the screen
Canton, Ohio resident Joshua Brown was the ultimate Tesla fanatic—and paid the ultimate price. Brown, a former Navy SEAL, posted hours of video of himself driving his Model S on YouTube in Autopilot mode, including one that showed it avoiding an accident.
Autopilot is still very much in beta. Perhaps because of its limitations, Joshua also became its first victim. Truck driver Frank Baressi was making a left turn when Brown's Model S plowed through the middle of the trailer and crashed into a telephone pole down the road. “He went so fast through my trailer I didn't see him,” Baressi was quoted as saying.

...on the electric chair

"The man never suffered a bit of pain," said Dr. Fell
The electric chair was invented to be a more humane form of capital punishment, but its first use was positively shocking. William Kemmler, convicted of hacking his wife to death with an ax, was the first man to meet his fate by electricity. On Aug 6, 1890, Kimmler put on a suit and tie and calmly strode into the electrocution chamber and allowed himself to be strapped in. “Well, I wish everybody good luck,” he said.
Warden Charles F. Durston ordered the switch thrown, and 1,000 volts coursed through Kemmler's body for 17 seconds. Although there was the stench of burned flesh, the doctors in attendance quickly realized Kemmler wasn't dead, and the switch was thrown a second time at double the voltage. Kemmler's eyes began to bleed, and his body caught fire. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Orville and Wilbur Wright, aka the Wright Brothers, are forever associated with the first airplane flights in modern times. However, a lesser known fact is that Orville was responsible for the first passenger death. Thomas Selfridge was an officer in the US Army Signal Corps assigned to its new Aeronautical Division, which was investigating air travel for military use. On September 17, 1908, Selfridge was the passenger in an airplane piloted by Orville Wright as part of a test. The propeller split and the plane went into a nosedive and crashed. Orville was severely injured but recovered; Selfridge fractured his skull in the accident and died several hours later.

6...in an automobile

...in an automobile
Amateur scientist Mary Ward was the first automobile passenger to die on a ride on August 31, 1869.
Mary was a true pioneer in an era when women were not considered intelligent enough for the sciences. She wrote many books on astronomy and microscopes, but her promising life was cut short when she went for a ride on a steam-powered car built by a family friend. She was thrown from the vehicle when it rounded a curve and crushed by one of its wheels. In 1869, Bridget Driscoll of London became the first pedestrian fatality. As she was crossing the street, she froze at the sight of an automobile (it was giving demonstration rides) and was unable to move out of the way in time before tragedy struck.

The Russians beat the U.S. with not only the first satellite but also with the first and only deaths in space. Soyuz 11 was the first successful trip to the first space station, Salyut 1, launched by the Soviets in 1971. The three-person crew, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev were able to spend 22 days on board, a record for the time. However, upon re-entry, their cabin had accidentally depressurized, killing all three instantly. They were discovered lifeless with blood coming out of their noses when the capsule splashed down on June 30, 1971. (On April 24, 1967, Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed during re-entry on the Soyuz 1, one of the earliest rockets, but he died on impact with the Earth.)

...by legal euthanasia
Euthanasia, or assisted suicide, has long been controversial and is still illegal in many places. The first legally sanctioned euthanasia was in the Northern Territory of Australia, due to the passage of the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act of 1995. The first person to use it was Bob Dent, who suffered from prostate cancer and took his life on September 22, 1996, with the help of Dr. Philip Nitschke. Three other people followed, but public outrage was so strong, the central government nullified the law a year later.

Crispus Attucks was the son of Prince Yonger, an African slave and Nancy Attucks, a Native American (but it's unclear if he was a slave or a free man). On March 5, 1770, Attucks was eating in a Boston pub when a mounting quarrel between British soldiers and Americans began to get ugly. Although the events leading up to his death are unclear—some say he picked up a stick and rallied Bostonians to confront British troops on King Street—Crispus was one of five shot by the British in an incident that became known as the Boston Massacre. Attackus' death spurred calls for the Revolution, and he became the first American martyr.

A Pennsylvania woman, Kirsten Taylor, 29, was found unconscious on the night of January 23, 2008, in her Lower Windsor Township mobile home. She was taken to York Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police had already charged Taylor's husband, Toby, 37, with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment.
So, what happened? The couple regularly used electricity as part of their sex play, but it all went horribly wrong when Toby accidentally administered a lethal shock to his wife with the power cord from her hairdryer—they apparently liked to add a little "spark" to their relationship.

The man who killed his lover while using a cucumber as a sex toy
A German salesman, Oliver Dietmann, 46, accidentally killed his lover, Rica Varna, also 46, with a cucumber.
On July 19, 2014, Oliver used the cuke to pleasure Rita. After it had served its intended purpose, he said he "put it in her mouth. But suddenly I saw there was smoke coming from the kitchen. I forgot that I had put a piece of meat on the stove for my dog."
When he returned to the bedroom, he found Rica unconscious. Medical experts later said that the cucumber got wedged in her throat, cut off her air supply and plunged her into a coma. (No word, at least none that we could find, as to why she didn't remove it herself—unless she was tied up.)
The salesman was convicted of negligent homicide, but spared jail. Instead, he was given a 20-month suspended sentence and ordered to pay a €6,000 (£4,718) fine.

The man who died while raping an elderly woman
Karma can be a real bitch. In 2011, 5'7", 250-pound, 53-year-old Isabel Chavelo Gutierrez broke in through a screen door of the home of a 77-year-old woman in Refugio County, Texas. He started to fondling her, but suddenly stopped after saying he wasn't feeling well. He rested for a moment, then once again tried to consummate his rape, but once again rolled over and stopped. His victim thought he'd passed out since she smelled liquor on his breath. She bolted from the home and called her daughter, who in turn called the police. When the cops arrived, they found Gutierrez dead from an apparent heart attack.

Australian Liberal Party leader Sir Billy Snedden was found dead in a room at the Rushcutters Bay Travelodge in Sydney on June 27, 1987. Police said he was wearing a condom and had died of a heart attack. His companion fled the scene to avoid being involved in a scandal.
Sir Billy's son, Drew Mackie Forsyth Snedden, said the woman was an old girlfriend of HIS, who had later become involved with his father. (She was somewhat younger than Sir Billy's 61 years.) Drew said he could not recall whether her relationship with his father had been "a one-off" or something else. "He'd had a number of lady friends around Australia and abroad. He got around a lot. On the night he died, he'd just been welcomed back into the Liberal fold, and he was at his political best. It was an adrenalin-filled evening. Eager for closure, the family allowed no autopsy and had the corpse cremated, hastily absolving everyone involved of any negligence. Long-time Rockefeller aide Joseph E. Persico said, "It became known that he had been alone with a young woman who worked for him, in undeniably intimate circumstances, and in the course of that evening had died from a heart attack." Neither Marshack nor the family has commented since on the circumstances surrounding Rockefeller's death.

In Xinxiang City, China, a woman out with her family went to use a public open-pit toilet and accidentally dropped her new $320 cell phone in the muck. Panicked, she called her husband for help, who jumped in to retrieve the phone, only to immediately succumb to the fumes and lose consciousness. Next, the mother-in-law jumped in, trying to save her son, followed by the woman who initially dropped it and then the father-in-law; two other villagers also jumped in to help. Although the incident lasted less than five minutes and the shit was only knee deep, six people lost consciousness and were pulled from the pit. By the time the ambulance arrived an hour later, the husband and mother-in-law had died of suffocation.
