Japanese Photographer Documents The Many Faces of Tokyo’s Stray Cats (10+ Pics)

With his pictures, Japanese photographer Masayuki Oki captures the individual personalities of the many otherwise anonymous stray cats that live in Tokyo's shitamachi area. His collection might be called busayan, which literally means "ugly cat", but the photographer has nothing but affection for his moggie muses.

“I want to travel the country photographing all of Japan’s lovely stray cats,” says the photographer. For now however he limits his setting to the shitamachi area of the capital, where he documents the streetwise cats as they fight, nap, and goof around for the camera. The photographer never reveals the exact location of his feline photoshoot, but if you want to keep up to date with his latest photographic exploits then you can add your name to the 48,000+ people who follow him on Instagram.

The Mystery of Synchronous Fireflies

In the first few weeks of June, visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, United States, are treated to a rare natural spectacle — thousands of fireflies blinking in unison like strings of Christmas lights hanging in the night air. The species responsible for the performance is Photinus carolinus, one of the few in the world that is known to synchronize their flash patterns, within a tenth of a second of each other.

Fireflies are actually winged beetles that use bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates. The light is produced in their lower abdomen where the insects combine the chemical luciferin with the enzyme luciferase in the presence of magnesium ions and oxygen to produce light. Fireflies are extremely efficient at what they do. Nearly hundred percent of the energy produced in the chemical reaction is converted to light. For comparison, an incandescent light bulb converts only 10% of the energy into light with the rest 90% given off as heat. Because of the absence of heat, the light produced by fireflies are called “cold light”.

I Made 13 Animals Out Of 13 Perfect Circles

I Made 13 Animals Out Of 13 Perfect Circles

I was inspired by the simplicity of the twitter logo, which was actually created out of 13 circles. I decided to challenge myself and see what other animals I could create as well.

I thought to myself, “Only 13 circles? I doubt most of the animals will even be recognizable…” but surprisingly, I was pretty happy with what turned out. Sometimes I was even happy before I hit 13 circles, and I would “cheat” a little by adding the remaining circles on a sharp corner to simply round it out a little, instead of being forced to change the shape of the animal. But hey. :)

I’ve sold a few prints. Contact me if you’re interested as well!

“My Laptop Is Set Up To Take A Picture After 3 Incorrect Password Attempts”

You know that feeling when you type in the wrong password three times in a row? Well it looks like this cat can relate. Two days ago user “pigeonkitty” posted this photo on Imgur with the caption: “I just got a text alert on my phone with this image attached.” It’s too cute!

Meet Fox Dog, A Pomeranian-Husky Mix Who Is Taking The Internet By Storm (12 Pics)

If you think that this beautiful creature is a fox, think again. Nor is it a fire-type Pokémon or the fox from the Mozilla Firefox icon. It’s a Pomsky. Called Mya. And it might just be the cutest dog we’ve ever seen.

If you’re still wondering what a Pomsky is, it’s a cross between a Pomeranian and a Husky, and while it might not be able to pull a snowsled, Mya can certainly pull in the crowds. A picture of her recently appeared on Reddit and users instantly fell in love with her bright blue eyes and her Vixen-like appearance. And can you really blame them? Look at her. Just look at her!

Mya lives with her human Dave Lasio in South Florida, but only when she’s not traveling around the various states of America. You can follow her adventures on Instagram.

GPS Trackers Reveal Your Cat’s Adventures During The Night

GPS Trackers Reveal Your Cat’s Adventures During The Night

If you let your cat outside and think it stays near your house, think again. A recent research used GPS trackers to show the daily movement of pet cats and its results surprised their owners.

“When you speak to a lot of cat owners they say: “Oh my cat just sleeps on the end of my bed, it doesn’t go anywhere,” senior land service officer Peter Evans said. Turns out some of the cats have “gone three kilometres from home.”

“I thought Semi particularly would be just local — bottom of the garden or next door’s yard,” one of the pet owners said. He was shocked when he learned that Semi was going into bushland and “over the hill and far away.” The owner is guessing that the cat is “looking for food which is probably the primary thing because he’s usually around eight and a half kilos which [the vet says] is far, far too heavy.”

The survey was carried out by The Central Tablelands LLS at Lithgow, in central-west New South Wales.
